Finding gluten-free swaps that actually work can feel like a full-time job. After plenty of trial and error (and way too many sad loaves of bread), here are the substitutes I keep coming back to.

Best Gluten Free Flours for Baking

Cup4Cup Gluten Free Flour (3 lb)
This is my go-to for cookies, cakes, and quick breads. It bakes up light, soft, and so close to “regular” flour that no one will know the difference.

✨ Fun fact: I used Cup4Cup with Nestlé’s classic cookie recipe for a New Year’s Eve party, and everyone said they were the best cookies they’d ever had. (Best served warm, of course!)

Best Bread Flour

Best Substitute for Au Jus

Better than Bouillon + cornstarch
Skip the powdered packets. A spoonful of Better than Bouillon with water and a little cornstarch makes the most flavorful gluten-free gravy or au jus.

I use this often for Mississippi pot roast recipes, as well as other pot roasts and hearty soups—it gives them the best depth of flavor.

💡 Another favorite: Great Value Onion Soup Mix (from Walmart) doesn’t contain gluten and adds amazing flavor to roasts and slow-cooker meals.

Everyday Recipes Made Gluten Free

You don’t need to hunt down special recipes to eat gluten free. Often, your family’s favorite dishes can be made gluten free with just a smart swap.

One of my Midwest comfort foods is Corn Casserole (sometimes called “baked corn” or “corn pudding”). The recipe usually calls for a box of Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix, but since that isn’t gluten free, I found a homemade Jiffy copycat recipe instead.

👉 I simply swap the regular flour with Cup4Cup Gluten Free Flour and it turns out perfect every time. No one can even tell the difference.

Best Bread Crumbs

These 4C Gluten Free Plain Bread Crumbs are budget-friendly, tasty, and save me from crushing my own crackers when a recipe calls for breading.

Best Store-Bought Bread

BFree Homestyle Sandwich White Sourdough Loaf (14.1 oz)
This feels like real bread. It holds up well, tastes great toasted or plain, and doesn’t have that weird aftertaste or overly sweet flavor a lot of gluten-free breads do. A staple in my freezer!

Final Thought

You’ll save yourself heartache (and money) if you stick mostly to whole foods. But there’s always room for treats that make life easier—and these swaps are the ones worth keeping stocked!
